Often times, mailers use Registered MailTM for proof of mailing and proof of delivery of important documents. However, when a mailer’s objective is to reduce postage expenditures, Registered MailTM may not be the most cost-effective alternative.
To better manage postage costs, consider the following. Use Registered Mail for items that have intrinsic value, such as jewelry, rather than for documents that could be easily recreated or that don’t require added security. The fee for Registered Mail having no declared value is $9.50, and the fee increases incrementally based on the declared value of the contents.
For evidence of mailing and proof of delivery of business-critical documents not requiring added security, use Certified MailTM as a cost-saving alternative. The fee for Certified Mail is $2.65.
Further, mailers might also want to use Certified Mail rather than Registered Mail because it travels with all other First-Class Mail®. Registered MailTM, for security purposes, does not travel in the same manner as other First-Class Mail and speed of delivery could be jeopardized.
